IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mildred Irene
Metzger
June 28, 1927 – August 28, 2021
Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother left this life for a better place August 28, 2021, at the age of 94. Born June 28, 1927 at home just west of Indianapolis, Indiana to Ira and Edna Fuller, she was raised in a loving family with her 2 brothers and 5 sisters. At 16, she graduated from Ben Davis High School and went to work. During WWII she joined the Indianapolis USO. In 1947, she married Ralph E. Metzger who studied at Purdue University under the GI bill. After his graduation in 1950, he worked for the Frisco Railroad. They made many lifelong friends of fellow railroaders moving several times and finally settling in Springfield, MO. Together they raised two children – Steve Metzger and Joycelyn Tinsley. She was a homemaker and when her children were older, she became a bookkeeper and then legal secretary. The couple retired in 1981 and enjoyed their home, grandchildren, travel and ballroom dancing for 30 years. In her 70's she started to lose her sight to a rare inherited eye disease, Choroideremia, eventually completely losing her sight. Upon losing Ralph in 2011, she continued to live in Springfield at the Montclair where she added many new friends and acquaintances.
Mildred is survived by her son Steve Metzger and wife Debbie of Tucson, Arizona; daughter Joycelyn Tinsley and husband Gary of Nixa, Missouri; grandchildren Gary Tinsley, Jr., Julia Young (husband Grant), Andrew Tinsley, Matthew Harper (wife Mindy); and several great-grandchildren.
