Obituary

Michael Roger McGinnis died July 1, 2013 at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri. He was born September 13, 1932 in Selmore, Missouri, the son of Clell McGinnis and Beulah Gahagan McGinnis. Michael graduated from Ozark High School in 1950, where he was a member of the 1950 State Champion basketball team. He received his undergraduate degree from Johnson University in Knoxville, Tennessee. Following graduation, he was a teacher and head basketball coach at Robertsdale High School, Robertsdale, Alabama. He returned to Missouri and received Divinity and Masters Degrees from the University Of Missouri School Of Religion. Michael began his career in the ministry at the Brunswick and Triplett Missouri Christian Churches. He then served as minister of First Christian Church in Aurora, Missouri for five years. For the next 35 years, he was Senior Minister at Central Christian Church in Springfield, Missouri, retiring in 1997. Michael was awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree in Divinity from Drury University in 1974. A member of numerous civic and community organizations over his career, he was a member of South Street Christian Church and the Gate of the Temple Masonic Lodge #422 at the time of his death. Michael was married to Donna Hill McGinnis on July 14, 1957, and they enjoyed 55 years of marriage before she preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and brother James Gerald McGinnis. He is survived by three sons, Sean McGinnis of Springfield, Tim and Susan McGinnis of Wheaton, IL, and Brendan and Julie McGinnis of Branson, MO. He is survived by six grandchildren, Blake of Rogersville, MO, Charles and Katherine of Wheaton, IL, and Jordan, Alexa, and Sydney of Branson, MO. He is also survived by a niece, Cathy Biele of Fulton, MO. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 8, 2013 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Central Christian Church, 1475 N. Washington, Springfield, MO, with private graveside service in Selmore Cemetery at a later date under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Memorial Contributions may be made to Central Christian Church or South Street Christian Church, 500 South Ave., Springfield, MO 65806.
