Maxine Stewart, 96, passed away on June 17, 2018. Maxine was born August 24, 1921, near Billings, Missouri. She was the daughter of John Francis Waid and Sarah Elizabeth Childress Waid.
After graduation from Billings High School and Draughon's Business School, she was secretary to Charles F. Newman of the law firm of Neale and Newman and a Civil Service employee at O'Reilly General Hospital in Springfield during World War II.
She was married on July 26, 1942 to A. Ronald Stewart, an attorney, after working at different times as his secretary. First and Calvary Presbyterian Church has been her church home since joining in 1942.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, A. Ronald Stewart, May 17, 1997; her sister, Frances Waid Curry, March 6, 2003 and her daughter-in-law, Donna M. Stewart, July 20, 2008.
Survivors include her three sons: Rev. A. Ronald Stewart III, Kansas City, Missouri; Dr. Gary W. Stewart and his wife, Denise, Stilwell, Kansas; Stephen D. Stewart, an attorney, and his wife, Kristina, Springfield; six grandchildren, Scott M. Stewart and his wife, Jennifer, Maryland Heights, Missouri; Jennie Stewart Stillwell and her husband, Kevin, Kansas City, Missouri; Darin Stewart and his wife, Donna, Olathe Kansas; Kevin Stewart, Grandview, Missouri; Andrew F. Stewart, Springfield and Alexander W. Stewart, Kansas City, Missouri. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Clay Stewart, Olathe Kansas; Alyson Stewart, Manhattan Kansas; Taylor Stewart, Peculiar, Missouri; and, Emma and Logan Stillwell, Kansas City, Missouri.
Maxine was a caring and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play a variety of sports. She provided holiday meals for the family for over 60 years. Even after age 90 she continued to drive to support her friends in nursing homes and tended to her yard and flowers. All her children hope to follow her example of living with grace, integrity, perseverance and determination.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, June 24, 2018 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Gorman Scharpf. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 25, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church preceded by a family graveside service at 9:30 a.m. at Eastlawn Cemetery under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
