IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Ann
Wood
March 10, 1935 – March 3, 2024
Mary Ann Erickson Wood, born on March 10, 1935, passed away on March 3, 2024. She was a devoted Christian, cherished mother, grandmother, friend, and educator, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and the memory of her beautiful smile.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Chester E. Erickson and Erma Rathbone Erickson, her aunt, Dorothy Rathbone as well as her infant granddaughter, Erica Roxanne Wood. Her passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Wood Cron (George), and two sons, Robert Michael Wood (Melissa) and John Erickson Wood. Mary Ann adored her grandsons, Joshua Cron (James Green) and Walker Wood, who were great sources of joy and pride for her. Family was at the heart of Mary Ann's life, and her love and guidance will forever be cherished by those she leaves behind.
Devoted friend and caregiver, Mary Breslin, stood by Mary Ann's side with unwavering support, providing comfort and companionship over the last five years. Rachel Bush of Cox Home Health remained a compassionate friend.
Mary Ann also touched the lives of many through her years as a kindergarten, first, second, and third grade teacher. Her passion for teaching, especially reading, and nurturing young minds left a lasting impact on countless students. Many will remember reading while seated among pillows in her classroom john boat, painted bright blue and red, her bulletin boards, and hanging plants. Colleagues, former students at Doling, her beloved Boyd, and Sherwood Elementary, and their families remember her with gratitude for the wisdom, creativity, and inspiration she shared.
Mary Ann was a proud graduate of Missouri State University. She loved the way it had grown. While attending classes as a single parent in the 1970s she worked as a teacher's aide at Disney Elementary and raised three children who ranged from preschool, high school, and college all at the same time. She was a home room mother, a PTA president, and a Blue Bird and Campfire Girls leader.
In addition to her work and service to the children of Springfield Public Schools, Mary Ann was a member of Chapter IA, PEO, and when in better health also enjoyed membership in Saturday Club III, the Binnie Clements Guild, and the Springfield Executive Dinner Club.
Honors included Teacher of the Month, Teacher of the Year runner up, and being honored by a former first grade student at Missouri University as the teacher who had most influence her decision to teach.
A celebration of Mary Ann's life will take place on March 8th at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home with a visitation at 1:00 pm and service at 2:00 pm, where friends and family will gather to share memories, laughter, and the love she so freely gave.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Harmony House or the Dorothy Rathbone and Erma Erickson music scholarship at Drury University, reflecting Mary Ann's lifelong commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
Mary Ann Erickson Wood's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love and warmth she brought to the lives she touched.
