Obituary

Mary Ann Lindsey Hough of Springfield, Missouri, passed peacefully from this life on June 26, 2024, at the Manor at Elfindale. She was 88.

Mary Ann was born to Alvin and Irene (Lown) Lindsey on February 13, 1936, in Carthage, Missouri. She was part of a large extended family in the area, with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Growing up, Mary Ann enjoyed school and close friendships. Perhaps most cherished was the time Mary Ann spent with her younger sister, Carolyn, riding and training their horses in the fields near their home on the edge of town.

Mary Ann graduated from Carthage High School in 1954. She then attended Pittsburgh (Kansas) State Teachers College and Springfield's Drury College, graduating in 1958. Later that year, she married E. Mitchell Hough, with whom she had a son, Lindsey, and daughter, Terianne. Mary Ann earned her master's degree in food and nutrition in 1962 from the University of Missouri-Columbia, defending her thesis while teaching part-time at Drury College. Mary Ann then devoted herself to sharing her many talents for the enrichment of her family and benefit of her community.

In the 1970s, Mary Ann returned her focus to training and her career. She spent 25 years in her primary vocation as a registered dietician with Cox Medical Center and was devoted to excellence in the practice of her profession. Mary Ann was named Outstanding Dietician by the Southwest Missouri Dietetic Association multiple years.

Mary Ann was an avid lifelong learner who voraciously read nonfiction books, newspapers, and scientific publications; she would tune in to NOVA on PBS to relax. Her interests included travel, gardening, genealogy, and bridge. She shared her passion for nature and the outdoors with loved ones. Mary Ann especially delighted in spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Terianne (Hough) Love and her husband, Jeff Love, of Springfield; her grandchildren, Alysha Love Anderson (Seth), Erin Love McDermott (Cullen), and Jack Love, and great-grandson, Oakley Love Anderson, all of Boise, Idaho; as well as her brother-in-law, nephews and cousins.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Ronald Lindsey; her sister, Carolyn (Lindsey) Gibbard; her former spouse; and her son, Lindsey Hough.

Services will be held Monday, July 15, 2024, at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home with a visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. and funeral to follow at 11:00 a.m.  She will be laid to rest at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Webb City, Missouri.
