Martha "Rosalyn" George, 91, Springfield, passed away Thursday January 9, 2025 in Magnolia Square Nursing Home. She was born June 11, 1933 in Springfield, the daughter of Ralph Earl and Vesta Maddox.
She attended Phelps Elementary, Jarrett Junior High, Central High School, Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University), and Drury College; graduating with a B.S. and Master's degree in Education. She taught 1 year in Neosho, Missouri and then retired from teaching over 30 years in Springfield Missouri Public Schools.
She worked a summer at Estes Park, Colorado during college. She also took a year off college and went to beauty school in St. Joseph, Missouri and got her license in Cosmetology.
Rosalyn was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she served in many capacities including working in the St. Louis, Missouri Temple and her local Family History Library.
Rosalyn was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry George; her parents, Ralph Earl and Vesta Maddox; and her brother, Robert Wade Maddox. She is survived by a son, Andrew Wade George and wife Lisa, Snohomish, Washington; two daughters, Linda Anne Gratton, Springfield; and Michelle Lynn Beebe and husband, Dwight, Liberty, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren, two step-grand-children; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
One of Rosalyn's special interests was art. She enjoyed painting and many family walls are adorned with her paintings. She enjoyed knitting afghans, sweaters, baby blankets, etc. After retiring from teaching, sewing became her new hobby and she made many beautiful quilts. She is most remembered for her painting, knitting, and quilting creations; but she loved all art including wood carving, leather working, and ceramics.
She liked to read and especially liked poetry. She liked music and played the piano and organ. She loved to travel.
Rosalyn was a kind and loving person and spent her life serving her family, friends, and all those around her.
Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 pm Saturday, Jan 18, 2025 in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. A private family service and burial will follow.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
