Obituary

Martha L. Brown (Hill), 87, was received in the loving arms of our Lord on July 26, 2023. She will be missed by so many, but we know she is free of the pain of her earthly body. For that we will rejoice, as she would want, that she is eternally home. She was born in Monette, Arkansas on August 27, 1935 at home to the union of Claud C. & Lorene D. Hill. Martha was one of ten children, growing up working in the cotton fields of Arkansas, as well as her Aunt's restaurant. She earned a degree from Greene County Tech (Paragould, AR) in 1953 for Cosmetology. Upon graduation she moved to St. Louis where she lived with her sister, Joy. Martha always took great pride in her work as a Cosmetologist. After meeting the love of her life, Billy L. Brown, the two were wed in St. Louis on February 12, 1956. In their 59 years of marriage, Martha experienced many adventures as a military wife. This included time in Alaska, Illinois, California, and Missouri. Martha enjoyed spending time traveling with Billy in their RV, wintering in Arizona, Texas, and Florida visiting many friends and family members. They also spent a lot of time traveling around Missouri to visit friends and family. While Martha so enjoyed her travels and friendships, her family meant the most to her, especially her and Billy's three daughters, Deborah, Dana, and Amanda (Mandy). She enjoyed being a wife and homemaker, always keeping busy in the girls' school, Girl Scouts and making sure the family had a Christian foundation. Martha and her husband loved gardening - including Martha's love of flowers - and took a large interest in canning & preserving produce. She also shared a love of baking and candy-making with her family members. Martha had a real sweet tooth, which kept her sweet and happy. In her spare time, she enjoyed league bowling, bingo, and visiting casinos. She sold Avon, making the VIP President Status, which was quite an accomplishment in their small town of LaMonte, MO. Martha made sure that all three of her girls graduated from the same high school, spending over 10 years in her favorite place. In addition she and Billy spent over 10 years in the Cummings/Nortonville, KS area, before moving to Springfield, MO in July of 2011. She always loved being outdoors and keeping an orderly home, and always encouraged others to do the same. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings Joy, Floyd, Earnway, Rudolph, J.C., and sibling-in-laws, Voy Smith, Sue Hill, and John Ward. She is survived by her daughters; Deborah (Joe) Koons, Dana (Dale) Wrenn, and Amanda (Terry) Donelson, Siblings; Jean Stokes, Glenda Ward, Lindon (Nancy Coke) Hill, and Bob (Rosalie) Hill. She also leaves behind her loving grandchildren; Whitney (James) Alfrey, Marah (Bill) Gauthier, Ryan (Evelyn) Wells, Ahfton (Joshua) Rupe, Kiley (Rodney) Scroggins, Tyler (Jessica) Donelson, Lindsey (Andrew) Hennessey, and Amy Donelson, Great-Grandchildren; Ava and Elise Alfrey, Fletcher Gauthier, Zoe Wells, Finnlee, Sawyer and Lila Rupe, and Crosby Hennessey. Martha was also loved by her step-great-grandchildren; Daniel (Nary) Alfrey, Dalton and Taylor Alfrey, Ashlynn Anderson, and Caelynn Green and great-great-grandchildren Mana and Talia Alfrey, and many nieces, nephews and their families. Martha was of the Missouri Synod Lutheran faith. She was loved and adored by all who knew her. She lived a good life and would tell you, "Life is to be lived, to make memories to last a lifetime!" Her memorial will be Friday, September 29, 2023 at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, MO at 3:00 PM. She was cremated by Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, Springfield, MO. In Martha's memory, donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is greatly appreciated.
