Obituary

Marion Poemroy Marcus Wright died on Oct. 13, 2011 in the Manor at Elfindale. She was born to Henry Charles Marcus and Hettie Belle Matthew Marcus on June 23, 1920, in San Francisco, California. Her family lived on Lombard Street there, and when she was a llittle girl it was paved in brick curves and became one of the most famous streets in the world. In June, 1941, Marion graduated Phi Bets Kappa from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Shortly thereafter, on June 21, she married a handsome engineer from Springfield, Missouri, Hollis Garrett Wright. The couple spent the war years in Newport News, Virginia and later in San Francisco, where Garrett worked as an engineer in the shipyards. After the birth of their son Hollis Garrett II and first daughter Judith Marion, Marion and Garrett moved to Springfield where Garrett joined and eventually ran the family firm, the Garrett Construction Company, and where their second daughter Janet Margaret was born. Marion spent the next 63 years in devoted service to her children, who survive her, and their families, including 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She held many family reunions for all after Garrett died in 1989. Marion enjoyed a wide, deep and long lasting circle of friends in Springfield, including, in later years, be beloved "withces", and she also maintained friendships in San Francisco, Boston and Newport News. She lived in the same home for 60 years. She dedicated her talent and resources to First and Calvary Church, the Art Museum, the Zoo and to many other civic activities and causes. We, her children, are especially proud of the work she did with a Campfire group she mentored consisting of girls from an under served part of Springfield. Marion is survived by her children and their spouses, Hollis Garrett Wright II, (Barb Ruth-Wright), Judith Marion Wright Burtner (Les Burtner), Janet Margaret Wright (Lael Greenfield). In addition to her children, all her grandchildren survive, including Lucanus Nadeau (Kris), Isaac Nadeau (Jenny Sallman), Bradie Wright (Mike Coulombe), Jameson Maples, Micah Maples, Andrew Wright (Caprice Roberts), Matthew Burtner (Wendy), Marcus Burtner (Barbara), Garrett Burtner (Sarah) and Jesse Burtner (Christina). Marion is also survived by her sister, Patricia Marcus Trocme`, three nieces and two nephews. Our entire family is grateful to the staff of Elfindale Manor and Compassus Hospice for their care and patience helping her during the last months of her life. We will miss our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and try to carry on in this world in a way that would make her proud of us. A memorial service followed by a reception will be held at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 22, 2011. Anyone wishing to give a donation in Marion's memory is invited to sent it to the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.
