IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margot
Mcginnis
May 22, 1935 – December 4, 2022
Our beloved Mother, Margot McGinnis, was born May 22 nd , 1935 in Kansas City, MO to William C. and Christine D. Hogin. She passed away on December 4 th , 2022, at age 87, after a brief illness. She graduated from Southwest High School in 1953. After attending college briefly, she married her high school sweetheart, John F. "Jack" McGinnis on May 18, 1956. They enjoyed 64 years together before his passing in December of 2020. They had known each other since childhood, serving as a Junior Altar Guild member and Acolyte at St. Andrews Church in Kansas City, where they were married. The Episcopal church was always an integral part of their lives.
Mom was a proud stay-at-home mother for most of her children's lives, however, she did at home typing, was a bookkeeper and church secretary at various times.
Jack and Margot lived in Kansas City MO, St. Louis MO, Pontiac MI, Quincy IL, Springfield IL, and Springfield MO. They raised 2 daughters, Susan Gilmore of Ft. Myers FL, and Linda (Mike) McGauley of Nixa MO. After Jack retired, they traveled extensively in a succession of motor homes. They visited all 50 states except for Hawaii in an RV, and thoroughly enjoyed their adventures. Bennett Spring State Park in Missouri was a favorite place to camp.
Margot was predeceased by her parents, in-laws, Paul & Sidney McGinnis, her sisters Christine Rhodes and Janie Wagner, and her son-in-law, James "Pepper" Gilmore. Also preceding her were brothers-in-law, Dusty Rhodes, Gene Morris, and Roark Wagner. She is survived by her sister, Andrea Morris, daughters, five grandchildren: Sarah (Josh) Suffel, Tyler McGauley, Juliana (Tim) Gerler, Lauren McGauley, & Michael (Jeanine) Gilmore, plus five great grandchildren. (Parker McGauley, Aiden Suffel, Avery Suffel, Paden Gilmore, and Kolbe Gilmore). She has numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and friends left to mourn her passing as well, including special friends Jocelyn Wheaton and Janice Woodring.
Margot loved to read and passed that love on to her daughters. Regular trips to the library as children is a fond memory. Margot was an accomplished quilter and seamstress, and loved to do counted cross stitch and other crafts. She always had numerous projects in the works. Making matching dresses for her girls, and sometimes mother/daughter outfits was a passion early on. Cutting her daughters' hair was a regular occurrence as well, much to her daughters' chagrin. For years, all family and friends who had babies received hand stitched art made by Margot and framed by Jack. Her family will cherish the hand made gifts she made over the years. Margot and Jack made it a point to attend and cheer on their grandchildren in their many endeavors, and were a welcome sight in the stands/audience.
Margot was always involved in volunteer work. She was active in the PTA, The Episcopal Church Altar Guild, Ozark Piecemakers Quilt Guild, and the Springfield Art Museum. She served as the Chairperson of Volunteers for the American Red Cross, and volunteered countless hours for those organizations.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Quail Creek Nursing Care for their loving care for Margot in her last 2 years of life. Also, a big thank you to Janice Woodring, an indispensable friend.
Memorial service will be announced at a later date. Donations can be made to the Arthritis Foundation, online or by mail at 1355 Peachtree St NE, Ste 600, Atlanta GA 30309. Mom suffered from arthritis her entire adult life, and with rheumatoid arthritis for decades. Despite daily issues with pain, she always had a smile and hug for friends and family and rarely complained. She survived several medical emergencies over the years, and was, despite her petite size, a strong woman. She will be dearly missed.
