IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret Jane
Morton
August 26, 1923 – August 29, 2017
Margaret Jane Wilson, the only child of Henry Emmitt and Anna Ella Wilson was born August 26, 1923, in Nixa Missouri and passed away in her home in Springfield, Missouri, August 29, 2017, where her sons Bruce and Gregg Morton were with her.
Jane lived in Nixa until age 10 when a job with the Frisco Railroad, and later the Federal Medical Center moved her father and the family to Springfield; her mother worked at Heers' and Ernest Jewelry in Springfield while she grew. She attended both Nixa and Springfield public schools. In 1940, at age 16 she graduated from Central High School in Springfield then attended both Drury and Missouri State Universities. She was a good student and participated in activities at all levels while she enjoyed music, dancing, social gatherings, attending church, and the many friends she made; she especially enjoyed being a Tri-Delta at Drury. Following college Jane became a legal stenographer and worked for the Davidson Law Firm.
During World War II, while O'Reilly General Hospital cared for many wounded US veterans, Jane volunteered with the USO and met a young Army Second Lieutenant from Connecticut when he was temporarily assigned to Springfield from Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio. Jane married Lt. Paul Morton April 1, 1944, in Tyler Texas among all it's roses, at a church where her mother could ride the train back and forth from Springfield. They were married 61 years when Col. Paul passed away in 2005. Those who knew Jane will remember how much she loved the Army life experience, its' travel, lifestyle, challenges, opportunities to meet new people, and the lessons her two sons learned about growing up "on the move." For Jane, the 30+ year period while she and Paul were "in the Army" was one of the most exciting times of her life.
Jane returned to Springfield in 1967 when Paul was ordered to serve in Vietnam. She lived here until her passing. Again, a large group of friends grew around her. She was a volunteer at St. John's/Mercy Hospital for 42 years and President of the Auxiliary, she bowled on teams well into her 60s and played bridge with a very close group of friends until shortly before her passing. She attended Christ Episcopal Church for more than 60 years and was devoted to it. Faith, Family, and Friends were the basis of her life, and many remark about her constant friendliness, good humor, and care for others.
Very importantly, Jane was proud of her family, especially her "7 boys" and their wives. The Morton "boys" include sons Bruce, Gregg (wife Ann), grandsons Mitch (wife Nicole), Ben, Jacob (wife Jess), and great-grandsons Brandon (Mitch & Nicole), and Rowen (Jacob and Jess). We all ask blessings for her memory and life, and we are humbly grateful to all of you who cared about her.
Her funeral is planned for Thursday, September 14, 10:00 AM, at Christ Episcopal Church, 601 E. Walnut, Springfield, MO, 65806, under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Memorials may be sent to O'Reilly Cancer Center in care of Mercy Health Foundation| 3265 S. National| Suite 200| Springfield, MO 65807, or to Christ Episcopal Church.
