Margaret Ruth Maple, 93 of Springfield passed away Saturday, December 23, 2017 at The Neighborhoods at Quail Creek. She was born September 30, 1924 in Muncie, Indiana to Emmett John and Margaret Zella (Zeke) Feeny. She attended Emerson Elementary, Pershing Jr. High and Central High School graduating in 1942 all in Muncie, IN. She later attended Ball State University, Muncie, Butler University, Indianapolis, and Purdue University, West Lafayette. Margaret worked as a research chemist for Warner Gear of Borg-Warner, Muncie and Armour Research, Chicago, IL as a metallurgist. After graduating from Indiana University, Bloomington with a degree in Chemistry, she worked at Eli Lily Pharmaceutical Company, Indianapolis. She was also a laboratory assistant for Dr. Belding Schriebner, the inventor of the artificial kidney. After raising a family of 4 (5+ with kids who lived at the Maple house, including Ken Boyer and Stephanie Agruso) Margaret went back to school and graduated in 1983 from St. John's School of Nursing.
Margaret was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, Muncie, Trinity Episcopal Church, Seattle, WA and St. James Episcopal Church, Springfield where she served on the Altar Guild and was involved in Episcopal Church Women. She was a member of Hickory Hills Country Club. She was also involved in Young Women's Christian Association, Girls Scouts of American, Pi Zeta at Ball State, treasurer for Springfield Baptist Hospital Medical Auxiliary and PTA at Eugene Field Elementary School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Francis M. Maple, M.D. and her daughter, Margaret Anne Maple.
Margaret is survived by her children, Jon Frederick Maple of Orlando, FL, Louise Kay (Maple) Wheeler of Springfield, and Thomas Edward Maple of Redding, CA; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 28, 2017 from 6-8 pm in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Memorial services and inurnment will be at a later date in St. James Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jews for Jesus, 60 Haight Street, San Francisco, CA 94102.
