Obituary

Luther Hollis Dugan, 92, died peacefully on Sunday, November 11, 2012 in Wilmington, Delaware after a brief illness. Mr. Dugan lived most of his years in Springfield and moved to Delaware nine years ago. A retired teacher, he was born on October 14, 1920 in Elkland, Missouri, the son of Robert Benton and Mary Florence (Hollis) Dugan. He graduated from SMS in 1940 and started his teaching career in Thayer, Missouri. He enlisted in the Army and served during World War II. After his military service he returned to Southwest Missouri. He taught at Stafford and joined the Springfield Public School system starting at Central and moving to Hillcrest when it opened in 1958. He retired from Hillcrest in 1981. He enjoyed quail hunting and watching his dogs work. He was also an avid gardener and took great pride in both his roses and tomatoes. During his years in Springfield he was an active member of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church and served in many capacities including elder. Mr. Dugan is survived by his son, Dan; daughter-in-law, Kathy; and granddaughter, Kristin Poppiti (Rob), all of Wilmington, Delaware. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Anna Lee (Kincaid) Dugan; four sisters: Edna, Grace, Lucille and Amy; and five brothers: Carl, Robert Sigel, Frank, Dean and Robert Benton. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, 1947 East Seminole in Springfield on Monday, November 19, 2012 with a chapel service at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Maple Park cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First and Calvary Foundation c/o First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, 820 E. Cherry, Springfield, Missouri 65806; Southwest Missouri Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 1630 E.
