Obituary

Mayme was born on October 27, 1913 in Bunceton, Missouri to parents Lula Belle and James Marion Racy. She was meet in heaven by her parents, husband LeRoy McGehee, sisters, Ruby Jiles and Maxie Wayant, son Glenn McGehee and second husband Lawrence Townsend. She will be dearly missed by her family: Son, Don and Sharol McGehee, and daughter in law Linda McGehee; granddaughter, Stacey McGehee, granddaughter Vickie & Chris Myers, granddaughter Tammi & Bruce Hartley, granddaughter Terri & Greg Sullins, granddaughter Julie & Mark Coble, and granddaughter Kristin Bolomey along with Great Grandchildren: Matthew Myers and Jennifer Willis, Bryce Hartley, Brooke Hartley, Logan Coble, Landon Coble, Jason Bear, Jeffery Bear, Matthew Bear and Stacey Bear. And, Great-great grandchildren: David Bear, Gigi Bear and Kadin Bear. She will be also missed by her dear card playing friend Shirley. Mayme grew up in Blackwater, Missouri. She won the most perfect baby contest in Blackwater in 1914. She would rather shoot marbles with the boys than play dainty games with the girls as a child. One of her first jobs was to play the piano during the silent, black &white movies. She also worked at Woolworth Five and Ten store in Kansas City. Mayme married LeRoy McGehee November 15, 1930. They had two sons, Don and Glenn. She and her Mother won a contest singing on the radio station in Jefferson City Mo in 1934. Mayme told us that she even picked the guitar in the singing contest. LeRoy worked for the Missouri Conservation Department moving the family from Osage Beach to Salem to Indian trail, and to Chesapeake. After LeRoy passed in 1970; she went to Blue Bonnet Beauty School to become a hair dresser. She moved back to Blackwater in 1971. Mayme married Lawrence Townsend in 1971 and opened Mayme's Beauty Nook in her home. She retired in 1983 at age 70. In 1984, Mayme and her sister Ruby opened Rainbow Art Studio where they sold art supplies taught art lessons. She has always enjoyed playing cards and games with her family. We did not go to her house without playing a game. She had a group of girl friends in Blackwater that would take turns hosting a game party 2-4 times a week. In 1991, after Lawrence's passing, she moved to Republic Missouri to be closer to her family. She loved going to the senior center to play pool and bingo. We had lots of great card parties. Grandma was a little competitive. She loved to win and "stretch the rules" to go in her favor. She moved to an apartment in Springfield in 2006. She had a great friendship with her neighbor Shirley and they played cards every day. Mayme had a unique love for animals including her companion bird (Tiny) and many visits by her "grandpuppies." During the last few years she lived at a nursing home and she was said to hold the award for best baseball player, best dart player, best dominos play and best beanbag toss. She never missed a game of bingo. Mayme taught our family many things including how to love unconditionally, how to work and play hard and how to be happy in good and bad times. She was a very special lady and will be missed dearly.
