Lucianna Janet "Janette" (Melton) Twitchell, 83, Springfield, passed away on October 3, 2015. She was born July 29, 1932, in Nixa, Missouri, in the same house in which her mother was born, to Lucile Meadows and Roger Leon Melton. Her mother remarried when Janet was 15 to Chaplain (Lt Col, USA) Leslie A. Thompson and they moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. They later lived in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, and Poitiers (Vienne) France. She was married to Air Force Captain Dwane D. Twitchell in 1959 in Paris, France. He preceded her in death in 1970. Janet attended schools in Nixa, Columbia, St. Louis, Tampa, Ft. Bragg, and Durham, NC. She attended nurses' training at Woman's Medical College Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia. She graduated from Peirce Junior College in Philadelphia with an Executive Secretarial diploma in 1955. She graduated from Missouri State University (then Southwest Missouri State College) in 1974 with a BS in Sociology (Industrial Plan). She retired after 25 years as a Service Representative with the local Social Security Administration. After retirement she belonged to Ozarks Empire Retired Officers Association, and National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE). She was the co-facilitator for the Springfield Survivors of Suicide Group from 1986. Janet sang in the chancel choir at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church and at Westminster Presbyterian Church where she also was an elder and played English handbells. Her hobbies were her dogs, reading, and T'ai Chi. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2015, at 1 pm at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Her body was cremated and buried beside her grandparents, William Alexander "Doc" and Dona Faught Meadows at Payne Cemetery near Nixa.
