Lorraine R. Bartelt, nee Marting, died June 6, 2009, in Mount Vernon, Missouri Veteran's Home. Lorraine was born April 7, 1919, in St. Louis, Missouri to Lillian Bradford Marting and Daniel G. Marting. As an infant, she was baptized into the Evangelical Lutheran Church and confirmed that baptism in her teens. She lived that faith until the Lord said: "Come Home." Lorraine served her Lord, her community and her fellow men as a volunteer starting as a U.S. Navy Wave in 1943. Because of her trained voice as a long distance telephone operator, the Navy trained her to teach blind flying and celestial navigation to Naval and Marine pilots. After discharge in 1945, she continued her volunteer activities serving as Red Cross Grey Lady at the Woods, Wisconsin veteran's facility; as a Sunday School teacher; choir member; youth counselor; Lutheran Women's Missionary League as a member and officer; elementary school student mentor; juvenile court probation office advisor; local and National Red Cross disaster volunteer; MS volunteer; St. John's Auxiliary; and a host of other agencies in Wisconsin, New York, North Carolina and Missouri. Lorraine met her husband Gilmer Bartelt while in the Navy. They were married at Bethesda Lutheran Church, Milwaukee on August 13, 1946. She is survived by her husband; their son, Larry and his wife Marti; one granddaughter, Sarah; three sisters-in-law, Lois, Janet Strohmeier and her husband Kurt, Penny Wegner, and her husband, L. Harley; two brothers-in-law, Donald and Roland; and a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Her parents and and only, older sister preceded her in death. Funeral services will be at Trinity Lutheran Church, Holland and Bennett, on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at 11:30 AM with visitation for an hour preceding the start of services. Burial will follow in Missouri Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity's Lutheran Women's Missionary League, the American Red Cross or to Bethesda Lutheran Homes, Watertown Wisconsin.
