Obituary

Loretta Jeanne Redfern passed away January 10, 2012, in St. John's (Mercy) Hospital, Springfield, Missouri, from congestive heart failure. Jeanne was born on August 23, 1935, on the family farm adjoining Little Creek in Shannon County, Missouri. She was the daughter of James H. (Herb) and Linna Pennington now deceased. She is survived by her husband, Jerry L. Redfern; two sons, Gregory Lee Redfern, David Allen Redfern and his wife, Merceditas (Jing); three grandchildren, Miles, Savannah, and Luke; one brother, James H. Pennington and his wife Clydene; two nephews, Barry and his three children and Jeff and his three children; and numerous cousins. Her education began in the Salem, Missouri, public schools where she graduated with valedictorian honors in 1953. She then attended Drury College and received her Bachelors of Science degree with honors in 1957. Continuing her education, Jeanne was accepted in the Barnes Hospital Administration Program where upon graduation, she was a Registered A.D.A. Therapeutic Dietitian. Her professional career began as she became a member of the therapeutic staff of Barnes Hospital. Following three and one-half years on the staff, her first son, Greg, was born at the maternity hospital of Barnes. Following this event, Jeanne and her family moved to Springfield in January of 1962. Some four years later, her second son, David, was born in Springfield. Jeanne's professional career continued in Springfield where she was during various times an instructor at Drury College, St. John's School of Nursing and Southwest Missouri State College. Thereafter, Jeanne ceased her professional career to devote time to her family, church and various charitable affairs. She was a member and officer of both the Southminister and First and Calvary Presbyterian Churches. Her strong belief in helping others was evidenced in her participation in Community Service League (which became the Junior League) as a member, officer and President. Further, she devoted a large amount of time to the Cerebral Palsy Center (now the D.C.O.) as a member, officer and President. She treasured each of her many friends and her family members, which were always foremost in her thoughts and prayers.
