Lola Butcher Given, 92, of Springfield, MO, formerly of Frametown, WV, died on April 25, 2017 at The Maples Health and Rehabilitation in Springfield.
Born July 9, 1924 to Levi Jonathan and Emily Belle Given Butcher, she grew up in the coal town of Widen, WV. In 1938 she married Hamilton Given, and they had one son, Earl. During WWII she was a "Rosie the Riveter," building planes at a factory in Akron, OH. After Ham's death she married James Bruce Given in 1959 and moved to the family farm at Frametown.
They had one son, Mark.
Lola had a keen interest in genealogy and was a charter member of the Elk River Chapter of DAR. She also was interested in politics and served as a poll worker on election days. For many years she wrote the column "Lola's World" in the Braxton Citizens News.
She was a homemaker and a faithful Christian. A longtime member of Hope Baptist Church in Frametown, she served for several years on the General Board of the American Baptist Churches. At the time of her death she was a member of South Street Christian Church in Springfield.
Lola was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Hamilton, her second husband Bruce, a daughter-in-law Reba Given, brothers William Butcher, Charles Butcher, Newman Butcher, Herbert Butcher, Lloyd Butcher and Orlan Butcher, and sister Eunice Butcher Doddrill.
She is survived by two sons: Earl Given and wife Linda of Newton, WV, and Mark Given and wife Janet of Springfield, MO; five stepchildren: James Given of LaGrange, OH, Lavon Motsinger and husband Ralph of Winterville, GA, Alice James and husband Randolph of Sutton, WV, David Given and wife Joann of Cumming, GA, and Theron Todd of Carrabelle, FL. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services will be at the Roach Funeral Home in Gassaway, WV. Visitation will be from 3-5
p.m. on Sunday, April 30, and funeral services on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., with her daughter-in-law, Rev. Janet Given, officiating. Burial will follow in the Given Cemetery at Glendon, WV.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Elk River Chapter, NSDAR, 200 S. Stonewall St., Sutton, WV 26601 .
