Obituary

Lois Irene (Moran) Rains of Springfield, Mo., passed on to her heavenly home on September 30, 2009. She was born on September 6, 1918, on the prairie of western Kansas in their home, which at the time was a railroad boxcar placed on their homesteaded land near Liberal, Kansas. She was the daughter of Frederick Olen Hunt and Delacy Pearl Hunt. The family later moved to Jasper, Mo. and Mtn. Grove, Mo., where Irene's father was a Methodist pastor. From there they moved to Springfield, Mo., where Irene attended Southwest Missouri State Teachers College. While there, she met and married Albert Wayne Moran, who passed away in 1949. After living in Miami, Florida and Memphis, Tennessee, she returned to Springfield, Mo. with her three children. Here she met Fred I. Rains who she married in 1954. Fred and Irene have enjoyed 55 years of family togetherness, world travel and a rich social life. Irene was a loving wife, mother and homemaker and a very special "Nana" to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a charter member of Kingsway Methodist Church and active in the church circle groups. She was also a member of Living Art Group of Southwest Missouri Museum Associates as well as a charter member of Twin Oaks Country Club. Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Al; her brother, Colonel Frederick Olen Hunt Jr.; her sister, Delacy Emogene Nelms; and her son-in-law, William M. Mullis. She is survived by her husband, Fred I. Rains; as well as daughter Karen Mullis; grandchildren, spouses and great-grandchildren, Bill Mullis Jr. (Escher and Tuva), Kari and Dan Clark (Kalli and Tyler), Annie Presley and Jay Selanders (Albert, Ellie and Mary Selanders), Fred and Jacquie Forester (Allee and Briton), Dee Dee and Steve Carpenter (Michelle and Kevin), Amy Lee (Lauren), and Christopher Mullis; son Michael Moran and wife, Cathleen of Suffolk, Va.; grandsons, Geoffrey Moran and Joseph Moran, Matthew O'Donell and wife, Christine (Lexie and Morgan); son Phil Moran and wife, Susan; grandsons, spouses and great-grandsons, Seth Moran, Ben and Amy Moran (Brendan and Dylan), Micah and Sarah Moran, and Jess Moran; and special nephew, Gary Nelms (Ann). Visitation will be Sunday, October 4, from 3 to 4 p.m., in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held in Kingsway Methodist Church, Springfield, Mo., on Monday, October 5, at 1 p.m., under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel.
