Lloyd Alton Marshall, Jr., 86, of Springfield passed away peacefully in his sleep shortly before midnight on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, Missouri.
He was born August 14, 1932 in Los Angeles, California to Lloyd Alton and Anna Lora (Phillips) Marshall.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Bessie; his parents; his siblings Virginia Burches, Norma Smith, and William Marshall; and a great-grandson Caleb Fann.
He is survived by his daughter Sheila Waln and her husband David of Springfield; his son Ron Marshall and his wife Patty of Springfield; his grandchildren, Brian Waln of Springfield; Trisha Hutchison and her husband Justin of Rogersville; Jason Waln and his wife Christa of Memphis, TN; Heather Fann and her husband Jonathan of Republic; and Nikki Forrester and her husband Scott of Ozark; and his great-grandchildren Devon and Hannah Hutchison; Hailey and James Hanson; Madison Fann; and Annalise Waln. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, their children, cousins and dear friends.
Lloyd joined the U.S. Army in 1953 and served in the Military Police unit near Texarkana, TX during the Korean War. It was here that he met the love of his life, Bessie Faye Jennings. The two were married and moved to Inglewood, California where he graduated from Pepperdine College with a bachelors in education. Lloyd held many titles in his 30 years as an educator in the Antelope Valley and Gorman, California areas including teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, and superintendent. He was an accomplished woodworker, harmonica player, past-exalted ruler of the B.P.O.E. Lancaster, California Elks Lodge #1625, and member of the Show-Me Statesmen Barbershop Chorus of Springfield.
A soldier, educator and coach, Lloyd's most treasured title was that of "Papa." He was a devoted father and grandfather to all who loved him.
Visitation will be held Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home with services to follow at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lloyd's honor to the Alzheimer's Association, 3645 South Avenue, Springfield, MO 65807.
