Lewis "Johnny" Johnson, 86, Springfield, MO died peacefully on Monday, December 7, 2009. Johnny was born in Burt, Iowa December 29 1922. He attended Iowa State University playing varsity baseball for the Cyclones. In 1943 he joined the Army Air Corps and later was one of the first Air Force offices to be selected to attend a civilian institution under the Air Force Institute of Technology program. In 1948 he graduated from Kansas State University with a BA in Journalism. Johnny retired from the Air Force in 1963 as a Lt. Colonel. From 1965 through 1969 he served as Vice President for Development at Drury University. He later worked as a Financial Consultant and 2nd Vice president at Shearson Lehman Hutton in Springfield retiring in 1987. Johnny's hobbies included golfing, hunting and fishing. He was a founding member of the Drury Panther Booster Club and in March 2009 was elected to the Drury University Sports Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gerry Johnson and a son Gary Johnson of San Antonio, TX. Johnny was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Sherry Johnson. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Memorial services will be held at 10:30AM Friday, December 11, 2009 in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Private interment will be in Springfield National Cemetery. Honorary bearers are Edsel Matthews, Gary Stanfield, Joe Byrnes and Carl Evans. Memorial donations may be made to Ozark Food Harvest or the American Heart Association.
