Obituary

Mr. Leonard Frank Ernstmann (March 19, 1925 - June 7, 2013) Mr. Leonard Frank Ernstmann died Friday, June 7, 2013, after a short illness. He'll be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was born on March 19, 1925, in Wichita, KS, to Frank and Minnie (Smith) Ernstmann. He graduated from Springfield Teachers College (now Missouri State University) where he served as Student Body President. He also earned an MBA from Drury College. On June 11, 1947, he married Patricia Louella (Boyle) Ernstmann. They were blessed with 5 children. Leonard and Pat enjoyed 55 wonderful years together before her passing in 2002. He was a devout Catholic and a 4th-degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. In his younger days, he enjoyed playing softball and remained a sports enthusiast. He also was an avid card player, loving any opportunity to play bridge. During his professional life, Mr. Ernstmann worked for more than 30 years at St. John's Hospital (now Mercy Hospital) and retired as Senior Vice President. He was instrumental in growing St. John's from its humble beginnings to the regional medical facility it is today. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, grandson Jacob David Gunderson, and sister Ruth (Mother Anne Madeline) Ernstmann. He is survived by his brother Monsigner Mark Ernstmann, sister Mary O'Neal and husband Bill, and sister Jane Meyers and husband Bill; He is also survived by his 5 children - Judy McCullah, Susan Scanlon and husband RC., Mary Jo Molumby and husband Steve, Theresa Gunderson, and Mark Ernstmann and wife Talisa; and 7 grandchildren - Robert Scanlon and wife Courtney, Tricia Brown and husband Matt, Bryan Scanlon and his partner Derek Hennigh, Christina Molumby, Nicole Molumby, Tyler Ernstmann, and Kaitlyn Ernstmann; and 2 great-grandchildren - Ethan Brown and Madelyn Scanlon. Visitation is Sunday, June 9, from 6-8pm with a prayer service at 7:30pm at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. A memorial Mass is Monday, June 10, at 10am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mercy Hospice where Leonard volunteered or to a charity of your choice.
