Leona Rose Olander Moore, lovingly known to all as "Posy," age 92, passed into eternal life on March 26, 2016, in Friendswood, TX. She was born August 8, 1923, in Pittsburgh, PA to Frank B. and Mildred Olander. She attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, where she received her B.S. degree and became a Registered Nurse in 1945. She began practicing in Richmond, VA as a cadet nurse during the polio epidemic. She became a head nurse at the Medical College of Virginia where she met and married Dr. DeArmond "De" Moore. Posy continued her nursing career in Durham, N.C. and Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Posy and her beloved "De" called Springfield, MO home for over 40 years.
Beginning in 1950, she took time off to raise 3 children. During that time, Posy served as Health Chairperson for the Springfield Council of Parent-Teacher Associations and from 1963-65 Posy served as President of the Mark Twain Elementary School PTA. Posy also became a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts, and President of the Ozarks Council of Camp Fire Girls, earning its highest award in 1972. In 1974, Posy returned to nursing at St. John's Hospital. Later, she worked in "De's" private practice until 1983 when they both retired. In retirement Posy became the Southwest Zone Chair for the city-wide Cancer Crusade, and she served as Director of the Visiting Nurse Association of Springfield.
One of her passions was traveling. She visited over 40 countries on 6 continents. Her final international trip in 2012 was to Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii with her sister, Miriam Jean Fee, daughter Mary and son-in-law, Gary Johnson. Posy was known for her vitality and charm. She never met a stranger and knew the power of laughter. Posy was universally loved and admired by family and friends scattered throughout the U.S. and the world.
Posy was a member of First & Calvary Presbyterian Church where she served the Lord Jesus Christ as a deacon, choir member and as a faithful student of Bible study. Posy is preceded in death by her husband DeArmond Moore, and survived by her children Richard DeArmond Moore, Nashville, TN; Mary "Ginny" Moore Johnson, Jackson, MO; Helen L. Rose Moore, Houston, TX, 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, one sister, and two stepsisters. Memorial services, under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, will be held at 3:00 p.m. at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, 820 Cherry St., Springfield, with the Reverends Andrew Chaney, Gary Stratman and Helen Rose Moore officiating. No visitation is scheduled however, friends are invited to greet the family at a reception in the church following the service. Private interment will be in Maple Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, 3500 Victoria Street, Room 218, Pittsburgh, PA, 15261.
