LaVeda A. Marshall passed away in Springfield, MO at the age of 90. LaVeda was born on June 22, 1925 and was raised in Sikeston, MO. She attended Southeast Mo. State Univ. and graduated from Southwest Mo. State Univ., now MSU.
She taught school for 16 years, and then worked in Real Estate for 10 years. After moving from Houston, TX to Springfield, she went back to school to get a degree in Communication Disorders and enjoyed helping children with speech and language problems in the public school system.
Her passion was music. She sang solos at churches, and while living in Southern California she sang with the Orange County Master Chorale. As part of the Chorale she sang on the Johnny Carson show, and in 1993 sang in Carnegie Hall in New York.
LaVeda was a long-time member of University Heights Baptist Church where she served on many boards, sang in the choir, and served as deacon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Franklin Altom and Eva Nolan Altom, her husband William M. Marshall, son James Stephen Marshall, brother Frank Altom, Jr., and three sisters Irene Minner, Jean Harrington, and Shirley McClellan.
Survivors include one son William A. Marshall and his wife Rita, daughter-in-law Beth Marshall, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Saturday, February 27 at University Heights Baptist Church from 3-4 PM with the funeral service in the chapel immediately following. A small reception for loved ones and friends will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Dr. Daniel Chisholm will officiate the service under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. LaVeda will be buried Monday, February 29 , in the Springfield National Cemetery with her husband William, who served in the US Navy during World War II.
Memorial contributions may be made to University Heights Foundation and the music ministry. Her grandchildren also offer the International Missions Board ( www.imb.org ) as another organization for contributions.
