Obituary

Dora Adelaide "Laddie" (Hornbeck) Marsh, 89, of Springfield, MO passed away Sunday, October 3, 2021. Laddie was born August 5, 1932 to Herbert and Verna Mae Hornbeck (Ford) in Eddyville, Iowa. The family moved to Ottumwa, Iowa where Laddie attended primary and secondary schools, graduating from Ottumwa H.S. in 1950.

Soon after graduating, Mom was hired by the FBI and moved to Washington D.C. She started in the secretarial pool where she typed agent reports at 70 WPM on the mechanical typewriters of the day.  No corrections were allowed or the entire page would have to be re-typed. She met the Love of her life, Max Marsh, while employed at the FBI. The family archives have 2 letters signed by J. Edgar Hoover, first congratulating Laddie on her marriage to Max, and later accepting her resignation. Mom was always proud of her life with the FBI.

Max and Laddie were married at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church, Washington D.C. on November 7th, 1952. Together, with 5 children in tow they made a warm and welcoming home for their family and friends during Max's 27 years as an NCO in the U.S. Air Force. Laddie devoted this time to being a homemaker and being active in the NCO Wives Club. Max and Laddie would sing in the chapel Catholic choirs wherever the Air Force sent them.

They retired from the Air Force in 1975 and settled in Springfield. Mom soon began a new career as a dental assistant with Parkcrest Dental Group where she worked until her retirement. She truly enjoyed her career and the friends and colleagues she worked with and supported. She and Max continued both their travels together and their love of singing.  Max and Laddie joined the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where they sang for 25 years in the church choir.  They were both avid bridge players and were always ready for an evening of fellowship and friendly competition. They travelled extensively, and especially enjoyed visiting friends in North Carolina, England, and Germany.

Mom was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in her early 60's, which required her to slowly adapt her life to this neurological disorder.  Mom lived the last 30 months of her life at "The Manor at Elfindale" where she passed away peacefully. The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the wonderful staff at The Manor. They were always especially kind and loving to Mom, as she embraced her latest home. We also wish to express our great love and appreciation to our youngest sibling, Karen. Karen lived with Mom and Dad and was Mom's primary care giver for many years.

Laddie was preceded in death by her husband, Max, and her younger sister, Elinore (Hornbeck) Martin of Omaha, NE. She is survived by her five children, Georgia (Mike) Schuette of Grayslake, IL, Greg (Charlene) of Branson, MO, Randy (Robin) of Springfield, MO, and Steve and Karen of Springfield, MO. 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
