L. Kelan Spalding went to sleep and woke up in the arms of the Lord on July 30, 2010. Kelan was born February 17, 1936 in Eugene, Missouri. His parents, Robert Ford Spalding and Opal Bruce Spalding preceded him in death. Kelan worked in the clothing industry from 1956 to 1973, with Oberman Mfg. Company, Levi Strauss & Company, and the H.D. Lee Company. In October 1973 he was employed by Prudential Insurance Company and served them for twenty years, retiring in December 1993. Kelan loved the outdoors -- hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He was a member of Elks Lodge 409 and Parkview Christian Church in Springfield. He is survived by his wife, Betty Carpenter Spalding; one daughter, Joni, of Stover; and three sons, Jeff, of Sedalia, Craig, of Concordia, and Kip, of Miller. Kelan is also survived by three step-sons: Randy, Rick, and Tim Carpenter; a total of 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Kelan Spalding will be missed by many, many friends who will proudly say, "I am glad I knew him." Memorial services will be held in Gorman-Scharpf, in Springfield, on August 7, 2010 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Kelan's name be made to the Springfield Boys and Girls Club 1410 N.
