Obituary

Kenneth Joe Crumpley was born December 10, 1923, near Crane, MO to Arthur and Verna Crumpley and died peacefully with family on January 17, 2013. He graduated Crane High School in 1941 and thereafter attended Draughon's Business School. At the advent of World War II he was rejected for military service due to a respiratory ailment so he worked at the Post Exchange of O'Reilly Hospital on the Site of what is now Evangel College from 1942 to 1947. O'Reilly Hospital was a key medical facility treating wounded soldiers from the front. He began working as a Food Broker in 1947 for Bryan M. VanHook Co. and continued in that business until his retirement in 1988, leaving as President of Crumpley & Associates Food Brokers. During his business career he was on many Boards of Directors to include several Food Broker organizations, such as Mercantile Bank, Speas Foods, Ozarks Food Harvest, and Ozarks Area Council of Churches. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shrine, First and Calvary Church and Twin Oaks Country Club from 1957 to 2009 where he enjoyed playing pitch and gin rummy with many good friends. He married Marilyn R. Turner on August 29, 1952, and their marriage continued until his death. He was preceeded in death by his parents, in-laws James and Orene Turner, brother Dale Crumpley of Memphis, TN, brother Hugh Crumpley of Springfield and his wife Mary Crumpley, and nephew Terry Crumpley of Memphis, TN. Survivors include his wife Marilyn, son Jim Crumpley and wife Gloria of Springfield, daughter Linda Lynch and husband Bob of Overland Park, KS, grandchildren Jennifer Crumpley, Kansas City, Matthew Crumpley and fiancée Lindsay Pfleegor of St. Louis, and Jeffrey Lynch and wife Rachel of Overland Park, KS. He is also survived by brother-in-law Jim Turner and his wife Judy of Doylestown, PA, sister-in-law Merrie Jo Crumpley of Memphis, TN, and several nieces. Kenneth suffered his first stroke at the age of 49, brought on, he swore, by bad experiences with rental property. Along the way there were other strokes, heart attacks, by-pass surgery, gall bladder surgery, back surgery, and a fractured hip, to name a few. Thanks must go out to all of his caregivers over the years who no doubt prolonged what was a wonderful life far beyond expectations. Special thanks go to Dr. John Kaicher, Dr. Mark Milne, ER Doctors at Cox South in particular Dr. Brad Messner, Dr. Fernando Cavero and the staff of The Neighborhoods at Quail Creek whose professionalism and compassion made his last few years as manageable as possible. Thanks also to Good Shepherd Hospice and Maggie Richardson. Additionally, we would like to thank all the many dear friends who have called and written expressing their condolences. We love and appreciate all of you more than you know. Respected for his honesty and work ethic, Kenneth will be cherished as a fine husband, father, uncle, and friend to all who knew him. He bore the indignities of advanced age with a grace and tolerance that gained the admiration of everyone familiar with his situation and he will be greatly missed by friends and family alike. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to Help Give Hope, 2733 E. Battlefield, Ste. 332, Springfield, MO, 65804, or Council of Churches of the Ozarks, 627 N. Glenstone, Springfield, MO, 65802. Funeral services will be Thursday, January 24, at 10:30am at Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. The casket will be closed at the start of the service. No formal visitation is planned but visitors may stop by the funeral home after 1:00pm on Wednesday, January 23. Burial will follow the service at Greenlawn Cemetery.
