Obituary

Kay Cummins Finnie passed away after a short illness on June 5, 2010, in her home with her family at her side. She was born on April 24, 1944, in Detroit, Mich., to Ernest and Alice Cummins who preceded her in death. She grew up in Sedalia, Mo., graduated from Smith-Cotton High School class of 1962 and Central Missouri State University. She later completed her M.S. from Queens College in Charlotte, N.C. Kay taught school in North Kansas City, Nashville and Charlotte. Kay met Tom Finnie at her best friend, Glenda Lewis' wedding to Tom's brother, Bill. Tom and Kay were married later that year in 1966 in Sedalia. They reared their children Tom C. and Allyson K in Nashville and Charlotte. She was an active participant in the children's activities and particularly proud of their attainment of Eagle and Gold, the highest ranks in Boy and Girl Scouts. She is survived by her husband; sister and brother-in-law, Marge Cummins and Gayle Stephens and their sons, Dan and Brooke, daughter, Allyson, and son, Tom and his wife Aimee and children, Warren, Reese, Grant and Emma and Bill and Glenda and sons, John and Steve and thier families; and mother-in-law, Evelyn Finnie in St. Louis. In Springfield, Kay was a past president of the Symphony Guild, past member of the Symphony Board, active in many First and Calvary Church womens activities and was serving on the Springfield Sister Cities Board. Kay made many friends in her twenty years in Springfield and in Nashville and Charlotte. The family thanks all of them for their support, comfort, cards and calls during Kay's illness. They were all greatly appreciated. Tom adds his thanks to Drs. Darrouj and Haddow and all the caring professionals who took care of Kay (and him) so well in St. Johns Hospital on the 3rd floor and in ICU, and to my friend, Dr. John Bentley, who was always there when Kay and I needed him the most. Kay was very thankful to have had Dr. Hee-Sun Kim, who is the very definition of the doctor all of us would like to have take care of us, as her family doctor for many years. A memorial service will be held in First and Calvary Church on June 25 at 2 p.m., under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Kay C and Thomas W. Finnie Fund at the Community Foundation of the Ozarks or the Springfield Symphony Association.
