Obituary

Judy Horton, 82, Springfield, MO, passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2023 in her home. She was born September 14, 1940 in Winfield, KS to James J and Mary (Kill) Byrnes.

She grew up in Moline, KS. Judy attended Sacred Heart Academy in Wichita, KS. Judy moved to Springfield, MO because her brother Joe was living there with his new family. She got job at Commerce Bank where she became friends with Mary Ann Horton, Carl's youngest sister and their story began.

Judy was an active member of the Catholic Church, singing in the choir. She was also a member of the ladies auxiliary and hosted marriage counseling classes with her husband, Carl. Judy worked tirelessly at every level of PTA, at the same time as she had children in multiple grades. Judy participated extensively in Scouting for more than 20 years, including earning the Silver Beaver citation in 1987.  For more than 20 years Judy supervised several areas at the Ozark Empire Fair, starting with Boy Scouts and working her way to Adult Hobbies. Judy was an accomplished crafter and artist. She was a wonderful mother to her children, their friends, and almost anyone who came within her orbit.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Carl and her two brothers and their spouses; Jim and Rose Byrnes, Joe and Connie Byrnes; and in-laws Frank and Sheila Horton, Jack and Mary Horton, Virginia and Joe LaScala, Bill Horton, Dick Horton, Catherine and Dorm Ferrell, Bernard Francka, and Mary Ann Horton.

Judy is survived by her children and their spouses; Carl Horton Jr., Frank III and wife Rose Horton, Alice Horton, Joseph and wife Helen Horton, Mark Horton, April Marler, Tim and wife Kodi Horton, David and Nikki Horton and Chris Horton; fourteen grandchildren, Samuel Borden, Hunter and Anastasia Horton, Alena Stambaugh-Weisz and Terry Russel, Crystal Weisz and A.J. Chambers, Britany and Doug Fox, Andrea and Canaan Smith, Maria and A.J. Scherff, Zackary and Amanda Horton; Carleigh Marler; Alexis Horton, Victoria Horton, Sam Horton; Jonathan and Lexi Horton and Jaxon Horton; and six great-grandchildren, Breanna Stambaugh; Lilah and Nova Smith; and Liam, Owen, and Luna Scherff; her (younger) twin sister and spouse, Jane and Bill Kristek; and in-laws, Mary Horton, Clara Horton, Pat and Bell Horton, Barbara Francka, Charlie and Linda Horton; family friend, Virginia Mayeux; "oldest daughter", Katy (Fender) Ogle.

Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2023 in St. Agnes Cathedral with graveside services to follow at 1:00 p.m. in Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. with a rosary beginning at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Agnes Cathedral, 533 South Jefferson, Springfield, MO 65806.
