Joseph Dudley Ollis passed peacefully from this life August 21, 2012, after a courageous ten year battle against cancer. Joe was born in Springfield to Aileen (Long) and Alfred Melville Ollis on August 26, 1941. He attended Greenwood Laboratory School and received his B.A. from Drury College. He served his country in the US Navy from 1962 to 1965 as a crewman aboard the submarines USS Barb and USS Isle Royal. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. Upon returning from the Navy, he worked as a Field Engineer with IBM and, in 1970, joined the family insurance business, Ollis & Company where he achieved his CPCU designation in 1974 and continued to work there for the past 42 years. During that time, he gave his time and talent to numerous community boards as well as Christ Episcopal Church Vestry. One of his favorite experiences was being part of a Rotary Exchange Group to Australia in 1968. Joe lived his life with family and friends to the fullest. His love of travel led him to many destinations and experiences that he enthusiastically shared with all. He was an avid horse racing fan, and always remained loyal to his "Chiefs". He enjoyed reading a good book, could give a restaurant review on any city in the world and never shied away from a good political debate. He was happiest when surrounded by those he loved and found new joy in the arrival of his first grandchild, Fletcher. He was preceded In death by his parents, his father-in-law, Rodney A. Johnson of Huzzah, MO and his sister-in-law, Charlotte Ollis of Springfield. He is survived by his wife, Judy; two sons, Christopher and his wife Jessica of Springfield, and Matthew of St. Louis; two brothers, Larry and his wife Fay, and Jim, all of Springfield; mother-in-law, Audrey Gibbs and husband Hack of Catawissa, MO; sister-in-law, Jackie Cheatham and husband Paul of Cumming, GA; two nieces, Jackie McIntosh and her husband, Greg of Springfield and Allison Ellis and her husband John of Cumming, GA; one grandchild, Fletcher Ollis, one grand niece, Brooke McIntosh and three grand nephews, Blake McIntosh and Shaun and Sam Ellis. Memorial Service will be Saturday August 25, 2012 at 1:00PM in Christ Episcopal Church with inurnment in the Christ Church Columbarium under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel.
