IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph Thomas
Netzer
September 10, 1939 – August 5, 2023
Joseph Thomas Netzer passed away Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Mercy. Born September 10, 1939, in Springfield to Joseph P. Netzer and Margaret (Thiel) Netzer of Billings, MO.
He attended St. Joseph's Parish School, Billings; St. Agnes High School, Springfield; St. Benedict's College, Atchison, KS and graduated from Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy with a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1962.
Tom worked for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Denver, CO and Wichita, KS. Then, became the Vice-President at Wright & Associates, Inc. (now Anderson Engineering), and finished his career as the Chief Engineer and General Manager of Quarry operations at Concrete Company of Springfield and Conco Quarries, Inc. in Willard before retiring in 2007.
He was in the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years and earned the Eagle Scout rank and was awarded the Silver Beaver. He was active in the Council Board, camping committee, and camp construction. Tom worked on the Ozark Greenways, Inc. for over 25 years, was active on the Tech Committee, and served on the Board of Directors for over 20 years-serving two terms as President. Tom was instrumental in acquiring and building the Frisco Highline Trail and helped get the show on the trail. He was the construction coordinator for Founder's Park. Tom was a member of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers (both Ozark Chapter and State) and served on the board as President and as a Life Member of the Missouri Limestone Producers Association.
Tom loved woodworking, old trucks, tools, and machinery, hiking, was never very good at golf, and particularly liked building or fixing things. Most of all, he was proud of his family.
He is survived by his wife, Sally Thomas Netzer; son Gregory and grandson Owen of Portland, OR; son Matt of Springfield; step-son Jason Cunniff (Kara); special granddaughters Jaden and Chloe Cunniff; sister Marti Verfurth and family of Henderson, NV; and brother-in-law Larry Russell of Billings.
Tom is preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; sister Mary Susan Russell; his children's mother, Carolyn Hubsmith Netzer; a number of good friends; and a gazillion aunts, uncles and cousins.
