Obituary

John Ballentine Steinberg was born on May 14th, 1932 to Harvey August Steinberg and Mary Jane Ballentine Steinberg in New London, Wisconsin.

He was raised in New London until third grade when the family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where his father attended a baker's program.

The family moved to Nekoosa, Wisconsin when John was in fourth grade. Here his father owned and operated the local bakery and worked as a C.P.A.

After graduation from high school, John attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. While at Lawrence, he was a member of the symphony, jazz band, and touring choirs. He was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.

Upon graduation from Lawrence, he attended Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University in New York City, receiving a Master of Divinity in 1957.

It was at Union that he met Darline Burgess, a fellow student. They were married in New York in May of 1957.

Following his ordination to the ministry in May of 1957, John served churches in North Dakota and Wyoming.

Their son John was born in 1958.

In 1966, John was hired by the State of Wyoming to establish the Child Protection and Family Services Department in western Wyoming. After five years he was granted a fellowship to the University of Utah where he received a Master of Social Work.

John was appointed as Director of Family Services for the State of Wyoming and served in this capacity for 18 years.

He maintained a private counseling practice throughout his retirement while living in Wyoming, Colorado, then Missouri.

John moved to Springfield, Missouri in 2000 so that he and Darline could be near their son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. Here he served as a trainer and consultant for the Missouri Department of Social Services and the CASA program, was a Family Services Court Consultant, taught in the Missouri State University Social Work Department, and continued his private counseling practice.

John was a trustee of the Springfield Symphony and the Springfield Art Council. He conducted services at local churches and served as a volunteer at both Cox South Hospital and the Well of Life food distribution center. He was active in Christ Episcopal Church as a Eucharistic minister, Vinton program participant and organizer, choir member, and Clergy Search Committee member.

John's wife, Darline, preceded him in death in 2019. He is survived by his son John Burgess Steinberg MD, daughter-in-law Katherine Lynn Steinberg, and his two grandchildren Lindsey Katherine Steinberg MD PhD and Christopher John Steinberg.

Services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 27th at 2:00 pm with a reception to follow.
