Obituary

John C. Roop, age 71, of Springfield, MO passed away Monday, August 3, 2015 following an 8 month battle with cancer. He was born in Kansas City, MO, February 17, 1944, the son of Charles Preston and Frances (Garbee) Roop. A very kind and generous man, John formally lived in Billings, MO and later moved to Springfield where he became an Eagle Scout and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1962. Right out of High School, he entered the US Navy School of Music in Washington, D.C. as a trumpet player. During his 5 years of active duty in the Navy, John graduated from the Juilliard School of Music and played in the Admiral Show Band. After discharge from military duty, John graduated from the University of Missouri College of Agriculture Coop School and later earned a BS degree from Drury University. John was an accomplished trumpet player, playing in the Shrine band and numerous dance bands. He enjoyed a wide range of music, including classical and opera. John had several careers in his working life and enjoyed his years as a landscape designer and grounds keeper for Plaza Realty's commercial properties. Earlier he had worked in insurance, real estate and ordering pharmaceuticals for Mercy Hospital and clinics. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Gate of the Temple Masonic Lodge #422 AF & AM, Scottish Rite, Abou Ben Adhem Shrine (Director's Staff and Greeters), and a past Exalted Ruler of B.P.O.E Elks Lodge #409. To lovingly cherish his memory his wife, he leaves his devoted wife, Roberta "Robbie" Ann (Underwood) Roop; children, Christopher (Tanya) Roop and Angela Mays, all of Billings, MO; grandchildren, Blake, Lexie, Trinity and Kristy Roop, Corey and Riley Mays; sister, Diane Collinson; niece, Cyndi Bacon, both of Springfield; and nephew, William Collinson, of Carmel, IN; brother-in-law, R.D. Underwood of Muskogee, OK; nephews, Dustin (Crystal), Noah and Evan Underwood all of Van Buren AR; Levi (Kelly) Underwood, of Fayetteville, AR; in-laws, George and Iris Moore of Springfield, MO; cousins, Bill Hilton and Wayne Tallant of El Paso, TX; plus many other cousins and dear friends. Visitation will be Sunday, August 9, from 6-8 pm at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Monday, August 10, at 11 am in Maple Park Cemetery. The family would like to thank the many friends who have held us up in prayer, sent cards, made calls and the many hugs and visits to comfort us during our difficult times. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Springfield Little Theatre, 311 E. Walnut St., Springfield, MO 65806, or the charity of the donor's choice.
