John R. Mongell, 99 of Springfield passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Christian Health Care East. He was a longtime resident of Springfield. John was born December 25, 1913 in Connellsville, Pennsylvania to Steven and Carmilla Russo Mongell. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 53 years, Edwina; siblings, Anthony, Michael, Joseph, Harry, Felicia and Florence; and a niece, Shirley Hook of Springfield. John is survived by his nieces, Camile Stryczek of Ft. Myers, FL, Jackie Peters of Michigan, Betty Droessler of Clever, MO, and Linda Mongell of Atlanta, GA; a nephew, Francis Manzella of Ft. Myers, FL and extended family. He served his country in WW II and was a member of the Rotary Club of Springfield for over 50 years, and Sunshine chairman for over 40 years. John was very active at St. Agnes Catholic Cathedral as an usher for many years. John was passionate about music. He played the clarinet in the US Army, his own band and several other bands over the years and made local TV appearances. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, May 31, 2013 at 10:00 AM in St. Agnes Cathedral Chapel with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. A Prayer service will be Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 7:00 PM in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel with visitation to follow until 9:00 PM.
