IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Lusk
Young
January 4, 1937 – January 31, 2023
John Lusk Young died on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at the age of 86. John was born on January 4, 1937 in Springfield, MO to Marjorie and Wayne Young.
John was a hard worker all his life and often reminisced about his first job when he needed to stand on a stool to make him tall enough to reach the windshields he cleaned. He attended Greenwood Laboratory School, where he made lifelong friends and was a football player and track star. He went on to attain a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at the University of Missouri and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. After graduating, John served a tour of duty in the army as an artillery officer.
He married Beverly Hanshaw, his high school and college sweetheart on June 20, 1959. They raised three children.
John's career was in the family business where he was vice president of Young Oil Company and president of C & M Realty. He was a member of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church and was formerly a charter member of National Avenue Christian Church. He was a member of Hickory Hills Country Club. He served on the City Zoning and Planning Commission, Historical Sites Board, YMCA Board, and the Springfield Symphony Board.
John loved traveling, particularly during Missouri's cold winters when he would take his family to sunny places like Yucatan and the Virgin Islands. His favorite vacation spot, however, was Sanibel Island, Florida where he returned year after year.
John was a patron of the arts. He enjoyed the symphony and Little Theater. The Springfield Art Museum led him to become a collector of local art. He was also a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal and Mizzou Tiger fan.
John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beverly, and their three children: John Philip Young, Anne Young Curry, James Dalton Young (Andrea), and his sister Beth Kurtz. John was proudly known as "Grandpa" to his four grandchildren: Madelyn Young, Ellen Curry, Tommy Curry, and Max Young.
