John Harold Ames, age 85 of Springfield, Missouri passed away Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2015, at home. John was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Marguerite McLaughlin Ames, and his father, Harold Ames. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ames; son, Chris Ames and his wife, Flora; daughter, Janice Stokes; grandsons, Shane Stokes and Nathan Stokes of Springfield; and sister, Jean Atkins, Florida. John was born September 19, 1929 in Centralia, Illinois and served in the U.S. Army as a Radar Mechanic during the Korean War. Following the war, he was employed by IBM as a computer engineer for 34 years. He received a bachelor's degree from Drury University. One of his greatest joys was traveling with his wife of 51 years, Patricia, to many international destinations. John was an active member of First and Calvary Presbyterian church for 45 years and served as elder and was a long time member of the 49er's Sunday School Class. He volunteered with Friends of the Library and was a Shriner in the Abu Ben Adhem Temple in Springfield, MO for many years. He was greatly respected by everyone for his strong and gentle spirit and left a legacy of family values, caring and compassion. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 27, 2015 from 6 to 8pm in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday, May 28, 2015 at 1pm in First and Calvary Presbyterian Church. Private burial will be in Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First & Calvary Presbyterian Church, C.A.R.E. Animal Shelter, or the Salvation Army.
