IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joan
Boyd
April 10, 1929 – June 9, 2022
Wilma Joan Boyd, 93, of Springfield, passed away at 10:20 PM on June 9, 2022, at the Manor at Elfindale. She was born the daughter of John Leonard Galloway and Ella Mae Galloway in Marionville, MO April 10, 1929.
Everyone knows Joan Boyd for her faith in the Lord, good deeds and values she has lived her life by. She was raised on a small farm near Marionville with 2 sisters, graduated from high school and went to work for Bell telephone in Aurora, MO where she met her husband, Tom Boyd. They were married in October 1952 and moved to Carthage, MO where they started a family giving birth to Jeff and Diane. In 1964 they were transferred to Springfield where their family was firmly planted for future success. She managed the family finances to ensure both children made it through college and entered the real world of life with all the tools they would need after making many sacrifices along the way. Joan's faith in God was the cornerstone in raising her children who both went on to have successful careers. Ball games, dance recitals, singing in the choir and more were on tap for many years. Joan especially enjoyed having 2 granddaughters to dress up, making clothes for them and playing anything they wanted to do. Then she was blessed with great-grandchildren later on, always loved to see and be near them all at special occasions and holidays.
She was a member of Glendale Christian Church, Telephone Pioneers, and the Springfield Public School System for over 20 years.
Joan was a hardworking, loving mother, wife, friend, neighbor and employee her entire life. She knew all her neighbors and was always willing to offer any kind of assistance she could provide whether it was food, an encouraging word or a phone call to check on them. Her favorite past time was to sew for Pioneer's group charities and meet for the monthly luncheon. Early in life she enjoyed fishing, bowling and anything to do with family gatherings - family was a top priority. The Boyd family was blessed with many good chefs as well during the holidays.
She had very special friends from church she would eat lunch with after church and they know who they are. Joan was a loving, considerate and most caring person that was the rock of the Boyd family for over 70 years. This special lady will be missed by many of the lives she has touched in her lifetime. Little lady with a huge heart.
Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cletis Thomas Boyd, her parents, and her two sisters, Mildred Foster and Helen Samsel.
She is survived by her son, Jeff Boyd and wife Kristy of Sapulpa, OK; daughter, Diane Rohde and husband Andy of Peoria, AZ; granddaughter, Lesley Laidley and husband Mason of Tomball, TX; granddaughter, Melanie Boyd, of Tulsa, OK; great-granddaughter, Kenzie Boyd, of Tulsa, OK; great-grandson, Derek Laidley of Tomball, TX; and many special nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM, Thursday, June 16, 2022, with the Rev. Chris Chiarino officiating at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM Thursday prior to the funeral in the funeral home. Private burial will be held in Missouri Veterans Cemetery.
A special thanks goes out to Creekside at Elfindale Assisted Living for their love, service and devotion in taking care of her along with the other senior residents. The same appreciation is expressed for The Manor at Elfindale during her last days on earth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Harmony House (Domestic Violence), or Telephone Pioneer's Charity Projects.
