Jimmy "Jim"
Cotner
Jan 27, 1938 — Sep 8, 2026
Mt. Vernon
Jimmy “Jim” Cotner, of Springfield, Missouri, departed this life for Heaven on Tuesday morning, September 8, 2026.
The youngest of seven children, Jim was born in Springfield to Bonnie and Virgil Cotner on January 27, 1938. A graduate of Central High School, he was a gifted and accomplished athlete, excelling in basketball, baseball, and track and field. He continued his basketball career at Iola Junior College (KS), where he averaged 11 points and 15 rebounds during his freshman season. Despite receiving Division I scholarship offers, Jim chose instead to serve his country in the United States Navy.
Following his honorable discharge, Jim returned to Springfield and began what would become a career of more than 35 years with the Springfield News-Leader. As Night Foreman of the mail and press room, he played a vital role in supervising the bundling and distribution of the newspaper throughout the city each morning. Jim was also highly skilled at troubleshooting and repairing the complex machinery used in the press room, effectively filling two essential positions and becoming a trusted and valued member of the Gannett Company.
Jim found great joy in the outdoors, spending time with his beloved dogs, raising cattle, and doing just about anything that involved working with his hands. He was a man who worked hard and took great pride in doing things well. And, of course, he had two lifelong passions that were never far from his heart: the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Jim will be remembered by his daughter, Sheri Pounder; his sons, Steve Cotner, John Cotner, and Shayne Cotner; and a multitude of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, along with many others whose lives he touched throughout his life.
A private graveside ceremony with military honors will be held to commemorate his life and service to our country.
Dad was a good man, a good father, and a good provider. He will be missed.
