Obituary

Thomas James “Jim” Parker (1940–2026)

Jim Parker, a beloved partner, brother, entrepreneur, and musician, passed away peacefully at his home in Springfield, Missouri, on May 10, 2026, at the age of 85. At Jim’s request, no formal ceremony will be held. He will be cremated, and at a later date, his ashes—along with those of his life partner, Don—will be scattered in their favorite town, Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

Born on July 24, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, Jim moved with his family to the Buffalo, Missouri, area at the age of four. Following the passing of both of his parents, Jim stepped into a role of immense responsibility, becoming the sole guardian and provider for his younger siblings.

The Parker family was renowned for their musical gifts. Jim, along with his sisters June and Jerri, performed across the region as “The Three J’s.” When June moved on to other pursuits, their sister Joanne joined the group to keep the harmony alive. The group’s talent was so formidable that after winning a Lake of the Ozarks talent show year after year, they were eventually banned from competing to give others a chance. However, the show allowed their eight-year-old brother, George, to perform solo—and he took home the top prize, marking the final time any of the Parker family was permitted to compete there.

Jim’s musical career later saw him performing solo on the Slim Wilson and Porter Wagoner shows, as well as collaborating with the Presleys during their performances at Fantastic Caverns.

In 1965, Jim met his life partner, Don Cash. Choosing a life of stability and togetherness over the grueling travel requirements of a professional music career, Jim joined Don in the world of cosmetology. In 1971, they opened The Harem, a landmark hair salon and high-end fashion boutique in Springfield. Together, they built a reputation for excellence and style that lasted for decades. Beyond his professional success, Jim Loved to Drive; he spent his retirement taking day trips through the winding backroads of Missouri and Arkansas, exploring small towns and enjoying the scenery of the Ozarks.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Beatrice (Valentine) Parker. His brothers: Jack, Jay, and George Parker, and his half-brother, John Parker.

He is survived by his life partner of 61 years, Don Cash (Springfield, MO): his sons: Michael Cash and wife Kim (Nixa, MO); and Jeff Cash and wife Sheri (Kansas City, MO), his sisters: Jerri Finley (Forks, WA), June Lenger (Ashland, MO), Joanne Arnett (TN), and Vicky Gates (Springfield, MO), four granddaughters (Sara Meeks, Jessica Parrott, Kristin Sneed, Raegan Cash) and six great-grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy. And a community of nieces, nephews, friends, and former clients who will miss his wit, his talent, and his adventurous spirit.
