Obituary

James (Jim) Robertson Doran, 74, of Springfield, Missouri passed away on August 22, 2024 at Cox South Hospital.

Jim was born on December 3, 1949, the first son of James and Judy Doran. His early love of nature, deep curiosity, and enduring optimism were defining qualities that will be cherished in the memories of those who knew him.

It was these attributes that led him to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout in 1964 while at Glendale High School where he also served as Vice President of the Latin Club and President of the Coin Club. His children remember him as an excellent storyteller, something that was evident from an early age. While in high school, he won a national debate title at the Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky and he served as a commencement speaker at his graduation in 1967.

In the fall of that year, Jim began his studies at Drury University, joining Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and earning recognition as one of the university's Seven Sages for academic excellence. He continued to serve as an active member of the debate team throughout university, achieving a national debate title in his first year. Jim was always a precocious young man, and landed a spot as an anchorman on KMTC's evening TV news while still in college. He loved flashing his press card for admission to sporting and other events.

Jim then attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law after which he returned to Springfield to begin his practice and start a family. During this period, his lifelong passion for music led him to manage Country Music Hall of Fame member Ray Price and he enjoyed telling stories from his experiences traveling with Price's band.

An avid reader of history with a remarkable ability to recall every detail, Jim was deeply curious and truly never stopped learning. He imparted his love for nature to his children, taking them rock climbing when they were young and serving as an enthusiastic listener of their adventures as they grew older. His children will remember him as a father who genuinely celebrated their successes and whose optimism provided encouragement when needed. His younger brothers will remember him as a mentor, guide, and uber competitive coach, always keen to ensure that his little brothers could do everything better than anyone else's little brother.

Jim is survived by his daughter, three sons, three grandchildren, two brothers, and extended family throughout Missouri.
