Obituary

Jess E. Hollar was born on March 24, 1920, to Everett Ray Hollar and Norma Martha (Chappell) Hollar in Unionville, MO. He passed from this world on September 2, 2010, in his home surrounded by family and friends. Jess and his wife, Lora K. Hollar, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary a few months prior to her unexpected death on November 30, 2000. A member of the greatest generation, he proudly served his country in WWII in Europe with the U.S. Army as Second Lieutenant of the Infantry, earning a Silver Star. He worked hard all his life, retiring at age 84, with his most gratifying work as an outside contractor for Great Southern Bank for 30 years. Prior to that he was a private contractor, was the first Greene County Building Administrator, was manager of United Savings & Loan, and worked for Ollis and Company Insurance. He was Chairman of the March of Dimes for over 20 years. Jess is survived by his two daughters, Terri McBurney, of Ozark, MO, and Debbie Fung and husband, Michael, of Rogers, AR. A grandson, Mark Weatherwax, and his wife, Cheryl, of Kingwood, TX; a granddaughter, Sherry Christensen, and her husband, Jason, of Kyle, TX; four great-grandsons, Shawn and Justin Weatherwax, and Brendan and Zachry Christensen; two great-granddaughters, Kjesten and Athena Christensen, a host of friends, including Doug Marrs and Jess' very special best friend and confidant, Charles Keller. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lora; his parents, Everett and Norma Hollar; an infant brother and sister, Leroy and Lily; and son-in-law, Al McBurney; as well as aunts and uncles. His beloved dog, Rusty, will be laid to rest with him. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, September 11, at Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 12, at Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Burial with military rites will follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, American Cancer Society, Alzheimer's Foundation or the charity of your choice. The family offers special thanks to Patrick Dopp, M.D.; St. John's Hospicecare; and Assisting Aging Parents for his homecare, especially Kathryne, Cathi and Karen for their compassionate care.
