IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jeannette Harrell
Metz
May 21, 1933 – December 15, 2024
Jeannette Lee Frost Harrell Metz met her Savior face to face on Sunday, December 15th at 4:47 p.m. She was at her home in Springfield, Missouri.
Jeannette "Jan" Lee Frost Harrell Metz was born May 21, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri to Cyrus (Jack) Frost and Clara Anderson Frost. Jeannette attended Kennard and Mallinckrodt Elementary Schools in St. Louis and graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1951. She attended William Woods College and in 1953 obtained an AA degree before attending Mizzou in 1953-54 where she met Walter Leonard (Peck) Harrell. They were married on January 15, 1955, the first wedding at the new Webster Groves Christian Church.
Peck worked for Phillips 66 and was transferred to Cape Girardeau, Missouri in November of 1955. Jeannette was a member of the Palsgrove Community Choir and Rose City Garden Club and delivered radio PSA's. In 1957 they transferred to Poplar Bluff, Missouri where their sons Scott and Mark were born, and Jeannette somehow became Jan. Peck and Jan opened Phillips 66 Three Rivers Oil Company in 1966. The family worshipped and was active in the First Christian Church, where the boys were baptized.
Jan's first job was at Frost Electric, her family's company, in St. Louis, working summers from 1946-1954, and worked next at Grove Laboratories in Ladue, Missouri in their personnel department. Jan had a 30-minute morning program on KWOC radio in Poplar Bluff in 1962 and was a substitute teacher for Poplar Bluff R-1 Schools for 18 years. She returned to Mizzou in1978 and completed 54 hours in two semesters and a summer to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Education. She and her son, Scott, had five classes together during that time, while Peck kept the home fires burning. She taught seventh grade Social Studies for three years at Poplar Bluff Junior High after obtaining the degree. After the death of her husband in January 1982 she was appointed as Fee Agent at the Butler County Missouri Department of Revenue and retained that position for 11 years. In 1993 Jan became the first Business Manager for the United Gospel Rescue Mission for four years.
Jan had a strong faith and a servant's heart. She was an ordained Elder at the First Presbyterian Church, an Adult Sunday School teacher, and a Moderator of the Presbyterian Women. She sang in the choir and was a substitute choir director and organist. On October 27, 1985, she and Gene Metz were married in the First Presbyterian Church during the Sunday a.m. worship service.
Jan was active in Missouri politics. She was a former member of the Butler County Republican Committee, the Missouri State Republican Committee, and Butler County Republican Women.
Jan was appointed by Governor Christopher Bond to the Commission on the Status of Women, by Governor John Ashcroft as an alternate member of the Commission on Retirement, Removal, and Discipline of Judges, and by Senator John Danforth to the Bi-Partisan Panel for Selection of Federal Judges.
Jan was Beta Sigma Phi (non-member) Woman of the Year for 1975. She served on the President's Advisory Committee at Three Rivers Community College and the Poplar Bluff R-1 Vo-Tech Advisory Committee. She served on the United Way Board in the early 60's and was a board member of what is now P.B. Regional Medical Center for 22 years. She also enjoyed volunteering for the O'Neal Elementary PTA, Cub Scouts, Vacation Bible School, and as room member every year (as most moms did).
Jan was an avid supporter of her sons' sports from the elementary years through college. She and Peck spent many enjoyable years in the stands and on the road during football, basketball, and track seasons. She enjoyed traveling. Over the years she and her best friend, Raona Hentz, took road trips to Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Michigan, Chicago, and Ashville. Jan enjoyed several trips to Washburn in northwest Wisconsin - her mother's hometown on Lake Superior, her first trip at age 13 months, and her favorite trip in 2019 with her son, Mark. She made many solo trips to Texas, Kansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Springfield, and in 2012 to Iceland, the Netherlands, and Norway.
Jan is predeceased by her parents, Cyrus and Clara Frost; her husband, Walter "Peck" Harrell; her husband Eugene "Gene" Metz; her brother, Dale Frost; her nephew, Jeff Frost; great-niece Megan Frost; and her best friend for over 55 years, Raona Miller Hentz.
Jan is survived by her son Scott and his wife Shannon Seelig Harrell of Springfield, Missouri, and their sons Zachary (Meaghan) Harrell of Blue Springs, Missouri, and Sean (Alexandra) Harrell of Springfield, Missouri; her son Mark and his wife Angie King Harrell of Springfield, Missouri and their daughters, Jessica Pearson of Bentonville, Arkansas and Lauren (Ryan) Hiser of Houston, Texas; three great-granddaughters - Dylan Pearson, Ezra Hiser, and Wren Harrell; and four great-grandsons - Cyrus Pearson, Leo Hiser, August Hiser, and Asher Harrell. She is also survived by Catherine Hembree Ford, her Goddaughter, who lived in the Harrell home for many years, her husband Allen Ford of Marion, Illinois, and her sons Charles, Jacob, and Cameron; Vic and his wife Sheila Ortega of Springfield, Missouri and their daughters Emily (Ian) Rone and their daughter Ann of Germantown, Tennessee; and Nicole (Nick) Wiegers and their son Graham and daughter Rowan of Edmonton, Oklahoma; Gene's daughter Donna Ferguson and her husband Jerry White of Longview, Texas; many Harrell nieces and nephews; and by the "cousters" (five special Metz nieces).
Jan is also survived by her sister, Mary Ann Russell Backman of Great Bend, Kansas and her son Jay (Kathy) Russell and daughters Ginny (Rick) Harris and Kim (Kevin) Frisch, and her sister-in-law Kathy Frost of Kirkwood, Missouri and her daughter-in-law Molly, Jim (Sandy), John (Nim), and daughter Julie.
Jan had a heart for serving her family, her church, her friends, and her community. Her home -filled with family photos, art, and books- was always a warm and welcoming place for friends and family to gather. She was phenomenal in the kitchen and her recipes for lasagna, Coco's brownies, Aunt Gerda's (say "Yerda") Swedish pancakes, and the Christmas cookies she baked every year have been shared with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly call her Granny Jan.
Memorial donations can be made to the United Gospel Rescue Mission , 421 W. Pine, Poplar Bluff, MO 63901.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 - 11:00 AM, with Funeral Service following at 11:00 AM, on Friday, January 3, 2025 at Temple Baptist Church, Poplar Bluff, MO. Burial will follow in Poplar Bluff Cemetery.
