Obituary

Jean Alice (Cain) Johnson, 90, was born November 17, 1926 in Joplin, MO to Edith Irene (Hawes) and Joe Clifford Cain.  She slipped quietly from this world on September 12, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She came to Springfield in 1949 to attend Southwest Missouri State where she graduated and met her husband-to-be, Elvis Eugene "Johnny" Johnson.  They were married on December 3, 1949, and were together for fifty-four years until his death in 2003.  During their long marriage, they enjoyed traveling the world with friends, family and on business related trips.

Jean was active in numerous volunteer activities throughout her long life.  She served many positions in the Pershing PTA and was a Bluebird and Camp Fire Girls group leader while both of her daughters were in school.  In addition, she belonged to City Federation, Sorelle Club, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, Progressive Arts of the Southwest Missouri Museum Associates of which she was a founding member in 1956, and several bridge clubs.  Jean and Johnny were charter members of Twin Oaks Country Club.  During the time they lived in Galveston, TX, she was active with the University of Texas Medical Branch Auxiliary and served for a time as its president.  They joined First and Calvary Presbyterian Church after their marriage and transferred to Covenant Presbyterian, when it was started by First and Calvary.  They returned to First and Calvary when they moved back to Springfield from Galveston, TX and were permanent fixtures at the early service on Sunday mornings.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Missouri was founded by her husband, Johnny, and for many of the early years, she served as a wish coordinator and grantor with that organization.  This provided her the opportunity to meet numerous visiting dignitaries, especially the ones who participated in granting the wish, but did not want to be publicly acknowledged with their visits to the children.

She is survived by both of her daughters, Patricia Ann and Karen Sue; son-in-law, John Jensen; as well as her two beloved grandsons, Chris Jensen, his wife Jessica, and their daughter Ambry, of Dallas, TX; and Philip Jensen and his wife Theresa, of San Antonio; her sister-in-law, Jody Cain Furman, of Kansas City; her numerous and precious nieces and nephews and their children and our special family friend, Shari Merriman, of Seymour.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 1 to 3:00 pm at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.  Private family graveside services will be held at Eastlawn Cemetery.
