Obituary

James W. "Jim" Matthews, 90, of Springfield went home Monday, July 2, 2012 at his residence. He was born February 5, 1922 in Joplin, MO, the son of Carl and Elsie Clubb Matthews. He was raised in Joplin and graduated from Joplin High School and Kansas State University. In 1941, he married Patricia Charlton in Joplin, and they moved to Springfield in 1948. He was a lifelong architect who operated his own firm, Matthews & Hillman. Buildings he designed include Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Eugene Field School. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Kiwanis Club and was affiliated with the Cerebral Palsy Center. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Carl Matthews; and nephew, Kenny Matthews. He is survived by his wife, Patricia of the home; son, John Matthews; daughter, Marcia Brumfield, both of Springfield; five grandchildren, Tricia, Chris, Rick, Jennifer and David; six great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; and one niece. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2012 in Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Bishop John Leibrecht, celebrant, under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Webb City, MO. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 5, 2012 in the funeral home, with the prayer service beginning at 6:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer's Association.
