Jack Gerald Harmon Jack was born January 5, 1927 in Protection, Kansas to Edward W. and Alice Gaye Tarr Harmon. He was a graduate of Fair Grove High School (1944), Drury University (1949) and earned a MSW degree from Washington University in 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy after high school in the later part of WWII. Jack worked in various child welfare and guidance programs for the state of Illinois, City of St. Louis, Catholic charities in Des Moines, Iowa and moved to Springfield in 1965 to become Executive Director of the Ozarks Counseling Center, retiring in 1991. Jack began teaching classes at Drury in 1966 retiring after 30 years in 1996. He also taught classes for several years at MSU. He was a past recipient of the Liberty Bell Award given by the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association for his child advocacy work. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Don Harmon and a daughter, Janine Harmon. He is survived by three sons: Mark Harmon (Linda) of St. Louis, Bill Harmon of Springfield, and Joe Harmon (Cherie Meyer) of Kansas City; a daughter, Julie Conway of Springfield; six grandchildren, Brian, Sean, Kelly and Ian Harmon, Will and Ben Conway; the mother of his children, Jackie Harmon of Springfield; and his beloved dog, Buster. Graveside services with full military honors will be Monday, January 25, 2010 at 10:00 AM in Missouri Veteran's Cemetery with Msgr. Thomas Reidy officiating under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 Pm with a Prayer Service at 4:00 PM in the funeral home.
