James Daniel "JD" Sellers, 81, of Springfield, departed this life on August 30, 2022. He was born September 10, 1940 in Independence, MO to Leslie Thomas and Ellen Maudelle Sellers, who preceded him in death along with sisters Ruth Yarborough and Marilyn Jamison.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carole Jeanne Sellers of Springfield; son, Douglas Kent Sellers of Brooklyn, NY; daughter, Julie Suzanne Wood of Springfield and grandchildren Gracie Rose and Jack Hogan Wood of Springfield and Bruno and Georgette Sellers of Brooklyn, NY.
JD's childhood was in Independence and he graduated from William Crisman HS in 1958 and then graduated from Central Missouri State in Warrensburg in 1962. After graduation from college, JD was employed with the Jackson County Juvenile Courts in Kansas City, MO. During that time, his National Guard Unit was activated for the Kansas City riots. He left this job as a supervisor in 1973 when he was appointed a Federal Probation Officer. His family lived in Independence until 1975, when his employment with the government caused a transfer to Springfield where he was instrumental in opening the Springfield probation offices. He retired from this position in September 1997.
JD was a member of the downtown Rotary Club and was a member of the board of directors. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Missouri Corrections Association. He was a past chairman of the Personal Board for the City of Springfield. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the Ozark Empire Fair. He was the President of the Alumni Association of Central Missouri Ozarks Chapter. He was a member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity.
Visitation will be from 3:00 – 4:00 PM, with Celebration of Life Service following at 4:00, on Friday, September 2, 2022 at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
