Hershel L. Bailey, Sr., 67 of Springfield, MO passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Mercy Hospital after suffering a long illness. He was born December 4, 1946 in Springfield, MO to Charles L. Bailey, Jr., and Helen C. Bailey-Woods. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jimmy Bailey; two grandsons, James Anthony Robinson, Jr., and Diondre Ra'Sean Johnson. Hershel is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sandra Bailey, the mother of his children Kayuana & Tosha Bailey; also other surviving children from his first union with Donna Faye Copeland, Dionna Johnson, Devonna Harris, Donnetta Bailey, Hershel L. Bailey, Jr., (Lisa) and Deedra Millhouse (Larry) of Oklahoma City, OK, and Shelly Rothermel (Tim). He's also survived by his siblings, Charlotte Seeby (Bill) of Wichita, KS, Reggie Bailey, Donnegun Bailey, John Bailey, Youlanda Herron (Tony), Bruce Bailey, Victoria Kerr (Greg), Charles Bailey III (Lisa), and a handful of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Hershel served in the U.S. Army and fought in the Vietnam War. He worked as a groundskeeper at Drury College for nineteen years. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and rebuilding old cars with his lifelong friends Danny Adams, John Wallace, Robert Wilkes and Lamar Jamerson. Hershel was loved by many and will be greatly missed by his neighborhood. He was better known as the neighborhood watchman, "Big Red." Funeral services will be Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 2, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
