Obituary

On the 23 rd of April, 2022, Henry Cornelius Krahn peacefully passed away and went on to his reward in Heaven.  Henry was surrounded by multiple generations of close family members at Cox Hospice unit prior to his passing.  He was 88 years old

Henry was born on August 14, 1933 in Altona, a small Mennonite village in Southern Manitoba, Canada – the eighth of nine children - to Peter and Justina Krahn.

Henry graduated from the University of Manitoba Medical School in 1957.  He spent 10 years in Family Practice in Walhalla, N.D.  It was here that he met Catherine Ann Lorenz, a pretty young nurse, who was home for a brief vacation.  Love ensued and they married July 6, 1960.  Four kids in five years soon followed.  After 10 years in Walhalla, Henry and family moved to Omaha, Nebraska where he completed a Radiology Residency at the University of Nebraska in 1972. Henry's passion for the Nebraska Cornhuskers football lasted his entire life.  The family then moved to Springfield, MO where Henry spent the next 28 years as a staff radiologist at Cox Medical Centers, retiring in 2000.

Springfield quickly became their home where they met many good friends over the years.  All four kids swam competitively, so in their younger years, days and weekends were filled with swim practices and swim meets.

Henry had a passion for lake life (which he passed onto his kids).  For well over 40 years, family gatherings were a constant at Table Rock Lake where Henry taught the kids to ski, drive boats, throw out an anchor and float at their favorite cove - which soon established the family name of Henry's Cove.

Family was Henry's was biggest passion, and he poured out time and love on his family.  As the grandchildren came along, Henry would often comment how smart they all were and there was "not a dud in the bunch."  His influence will continue to live on through his kids, and he has created quite a medical legacy with his sons and several grandchildren following in his steps to become medical doctors.

Henry always had to be busy and had many hobbies.  He loved hunting and fishing, spending many hours and fun trips his sons Tim and Mike as well as grandchildren and close friends.  His favorite fishing trip was at a float plane fly-in lodge at Bamaji Lake in Northern Ontario. Henry made the trip to Canada walleye fishing 59 consecutive years until Covid ended the streak in 2020. Henry's passion for hunting also revolved around spending time with family and friends. Nebraska pheasant  hunts were part of his life for 50 years, most recently the fall of 2021.

Henry was an avid golfer.  He was able to enjoy golf more frequently after his retirement.  He and Cathy spent many hours golfing in Springfield at Hickory Hills Country Club. He and Cathy also loved playing in Palm Desert, CA where they were blessed to become snowbirds during the winter months following retirement.  Wherever he went, Henry was the mastermind and organizer of his friends' golf group, earning him the title of Golf Czar.

Working outside with his flowers and fountain gave him countless hours of peace and happiness.  If you couldn't find Henry in the house, most likely he was increasing the beauty outside.

Henry was a longtime member of Kingsway Methodist Church where he was involved in weekly bible studies.

It would be almost impossible to find someone more caring and generous then Henry.  He put everyone else's needs above his own. He will be greatly missed by his family and their many close friends.

Henry was preceded in death by his son Tim of Memphis, TN.  Henry was also preceded in death by his parents Peter and Justina, his siblings Peter, Linie, Peter, Herta, Susan, Frieda, George, Ernie.

Henry is survived by his devoted wife Cathy.  Henry is also survived by his loving children, Mike Krahn and his wife Eve of Kansas City, MO; Jane Ballenger and her husband Jay of Springfield, MO; Cindi VanWingerden and her husband Abe of Huntersville, NC; Tim's wife Maria of Memphis,TN.

Henry is also survived by 12 treasured grandchildren: Alexis Kollasch, Katie Krahn, Chris Krahn, Mallory Krahn and husband Drew Thomas, Madeline Krahn, Erin Krahn, Megan Evans and husband Will, Macy Ballenger, Brayton Ballenger, Noah VanWingerden, Andrew VanWingerden, and Zach VanWingerden; three great-grandchildren: Emma, Adeline, and Owen Evans.
