Obituary

Helen Sanford Vincent, age 94, died on Sunday, June 16, 2013, in Kansas City, MO. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Helen lived her life with joy. She was born in Carthage, MO on January 14, 1919, the second child of James L. and Bess Putnam Smith. She was raised in Baxter Springs, KS. In 1940 she graduated from the University of Missouri where she was active in Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, James L. Smith, Jr., her husband of 54 years, William P. Sanford and her son, Grady H. Sanford II. She is survived by daughter, Susan S. Sanford, of Sequim, WA; son William P. Sanford, Jr. and wife Carol of Daufuskie Island, SC and daughter-in-law Carol W. Sanford of Westwood Hills, KS. She was blessed with five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. After the death of her first husband, Helen married Joe E. Vincent whom she had known since childhood. This marriage brought Joe's six daughters and their families to Helen's life. Joe died in 2003. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Bishop Spencer Place in Kansas City at 10 AM on Thursday, June 20th. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield, MO at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 21st. A reception will follow at Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, Springfield, MO. Arrangements are under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
