Obituary

Helen D. Stombaugh passed away on Monday, Nov. 22, She was a long time resident of Springfield. Helen came to Springfield with her husband Tom Stombaugh in 1953. They made their home here and raised 4 sons. As Tom was a professor at MSU, they were active in the University until his death in 2004. Born in Morrisonville, IL on the family farm Dec. 13, 1920. She and her sister Doris grew up on the farm which she has managed from here for 40 years. If you were ever curious about the price of soy beans, all you needed to do was ask. She received her bachelor degree from Illinois State University and her masters from MSU. Throughout her teaching career, she taught business courses in high school and also community college and adult education. Always the perfectionist, when she became interested in a hobby, whether antiques, sewing, knitting, photography, she studied and became an expert in that field. At 80 she got her first computer and loved working on it. Always reading, always learning. She is survived by her sons and their families. Terry and Debbie Stombaugh of Springfield. Dana and Marilyn Stombaugh of Honolulu. Stephen Stombaugh from Springfield and Jeff and Maradee Stombaugh of Broken Arrow, OK. Helen has 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren living from Springfield to OK to NC to WA to Hong Kong. The memory of her strength and character will be a constant reminder of what we are capable of. She will live on in our hearts and be with us always. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Tom Stombaugh Scholarship Fund at MSU Foundation Office, 300 South Jefferson, Springfield, MO 65806.
