Obituary

A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.  –  Maya Angelou

Harry was an extraordinary man with a unique mix of talents. He was honorable, loyal, intelligent, funny, and a lover of animals. He could be intensely opinionated and outspoken but at heart always gentle and kind. He was a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Business, a Sigma Chi, an Internal Revenue Service Field Agent, a land developer and real estate broker, a home builder, city commissioner, businessman, and an avid investor. He was a skilled pool player who once played Minnesota Fats (Harry lost) and a tennis player who coached his men's tennis team to a national championship. His women's tennis teams never won nationals but had a lot of fun. He was a fierce gin rummy player who loved the times he shared with the guys in the Twin Oaks card room. Growing up in Manhattan, Kansas, Harry knew everything there was to know about Kansas State University basketball and football. He championed K-State sports passionately all his life, through both good and bad seasons.

Most of all, Harry was a family man! He loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. He strived in service to his family until his very last day. Harry is survived by his wife Jeanne "Skip" Phelps, whom he married when she was just 19 and he was 20, daughters Leslie Phelps and Mary Voight (Dana), grandsons Darren (Cassie), Evan (Bella), and Jake Voight, great-grandchildren Emma, Grace, and Finn, brother Bob Phelps, and many forever friends.

A gathering of family and friends to honor Harry's life will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025 from 2 to 4 pm at Twin Oaks Country Club, Springfield Missouri. For those wishing to make a donation in Harry's name, he supported many charities and organizations, including especially the Kansas State University Ahearn Fund ( https://ahearnfund.com/ ) and the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri ( https://www.swh.org/)
